Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about SolarBill โ€” whether you're a homeowner looking to go solar or an installer building quotes.

What is SolarBill and how does it work?
SolarBill reads your electricity bill and uses your actual household usage data to calculate exactly what size solar system you need. Upload one or more bills, and within seconds you'll get a personalised recommendation showing the right solar system size, expected savings, and how long it takes to pay off.
Is SolarBill free for homeowners?
Yes โ€” completely free for Australian homeowners. Upload your bills, get your recommendation, and review your savings estimate at no cost. There's nothing to pay and no credit card required.
Which electricity bills does SolarBill support?
SolarBill works with bills from all major Australian retailers including AGL, Origin Energy, Energy Australia, Momentum Energy, Powershop, Red Energy, Alinta Energy, Simply Energy and more. It supports both PDF and photo uploads. If your bill is readable, SolarBill can work with it.
How accurate is the recommendation?
The more bills you upload, the more accurate the result. A single bill gives a good estimate; two or three bills across different seasons gives a highly accurate picture of your year-round usage. SolarBill uses your actual usage data, your location's solar irradiance, and real system efficiency figures โ€” not generic averages.
Is my bill data stored or shared?
Your bill images are processed to extract usage data and are not permanently stored on our servers. The extracted data (daily usage, tariff, location) is used only to generate your recommendation. We do not sell or share your personal data with third parties. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Do I need to create an account?
No account is needed to use the free solar calculator. Simply upload your bill and get your result instantly. Creating a free account lets you save your results and access them later.
I already have solar โ€” can SolarBill still help me?
Yes. SolarBill automatically detects if you already have solar from your bill. If you do, it switches to a battery-only recommendation โ€” showing how much of your exported solar you could store in a battery instead of selling back to the grid at a low feed-in rate, and how much you'd save by doing so.
Why does the winter card show a lower percentage?
Solar panels generate less power in winter because the days are shorter and the sun sits lower in the sky. In NSW for example, winter delivers around 3.4 peak sun hours per day compared to 5.8 in summer. Your heating load also tends to be higher in winter. The seasonal cards show you what to realistically expect each season โ€” winter will always be the lowest performer, which is completely normal.
What does "self-sufficiency" mean?
Self-sufficiency is the percentage of your electricity needs covered by your solar system (and battery if included). A 90% self-sufficient home is meeting 90% of its electricity demand from solar, with only 10% coming from the grid. The goal of SolarBill's recommendation is to get you as close to 100% as practically possible.
My bills only cover summer โ€” will the recommendation still be accurate?
SolarBill detects which seasons your bills cover and applies typical seasonal usage patterns for your state to estimate the missing periods. A warning will appear on your result if winter data is missing, since winter has the highest electricity demand. For the most accurate result, upload a bill from June or July alongside your other bills.

What is SolarBill for installers?
SolarBill is a sales tool for solar installers and their reps. It scans a customer's electricity bill in seconds, generates an accurate system recommendation, and feeds that data directly into a quoting tool where you can build a full job quote, generate a customer-facing Quote PDF, Job Card, and Purchase Order โ€” all in one workflow.
How does the bill scanning work?
Your rep uploads a photo or PDF of the customer's bill directly in the appointment. SolarBill reads the bill and extracts daily usage, tariff rates, billing period, customer name, address, and feed-in data. Up to 4 bills can be scanned and averaged together for a more accurate year-round recommendation. The whole process takes under 30 seconds.
Can multiple team members use the same account?
Yes. The Pro plan supports up to 4 staff members under one installer account. Each rep gets their own login and can run the calculator and quoting tool independently. The account owner can manage staff access from the dashboard.
What does the quoting tool include?
The quoting tool includes a full product catalogue (panels, inverters, batteries, racking, switches, accessories, and install charges), automatic STC rebate calculation, configurable margin and overhead settings, rep commission tracking, and three output documents โ€” a Job Card (no pricing, for the installation team), a Customer Quote PDF (with full pricing), and a Purchase Order for your supplier.
Can I customise the product list and pricing?
Yes. Your account comes pre-loaded with a default catalogue of over 270 products. You can update prices, mark products as discontinued, add your own products, and remove anything you don't use. Each installer account maintains its own independent pricing.
How are STCs calculated?
STCs are calculated automatically when you enter the system's DC output (watts) and select the installation state. The formula uses the current deeming period, your location's zone rating, and the current STC price to calculate the rebate amount. This is deducted from the cost base before margin is applied. The STC price and deeming period are updated annually.
How does the margin and commission calculation work?
The quote tool calculates: Cost base (all products + overheads โˆ’ STC rebate) โ†’ Sell price (cost base with your margin % applied) โ†’ Rep commission (added on top of sell price) โ†’ Customer total. Your net profit is the margin amount minus the rep commission. Default margin is 25% and default commission is 10%, both adjustable per job.
What auto-calculations happen when I add products?
Several things happen automatically when products are selected: Rails and mounting are calculated from panel count and roof type. PV Label is added when panels are selected. Battery Label is added when a battery is selected. BMS is added for compatible battery brands based on module count. Install charges are set based on whether it's solar-only or solar + battery. STC rebate updates when the system DC wattage changes.
What plans are available for installers?
SolarBill offers a Starter plan for solo installers and a Pro plan for teams of up to 4. Both include the calculator, bill scanning, and quoting tool. The Pro plan adds team member accounts and higher monthly scan limits. Contact us at solarbill.com.au/installers for current pricing.
What are quote credits?
Each time you generate a Quote PDF or Purchase Order, one credit is used. Job Cards are always free. Credits can be purchased in packs of 10, 25, or 50. Your current credit balance is shown in the quoting tool header. Subscribers on active plans receive a monthly credit allocation.
